The Butcher Block opened in 1995 as a small Irish butcher shop in Sunnyside, Queens, founded by Noel Gaynor and Michael Roche. Word travelled fast. Neighbours came for fresh cuts, rashers, and black and white puddings, then stayed for hot Irish breakfast sandwiches, beef stew, and shepherd’s pie. Before long the shop was a Sunnyside staple.
In August 2003, a fire broke out in the building next door and destroyed the shop along with eight years of memories. It was a devastating loss for us and for the community we served. But Sunnyside rallied around us, and through hard work and a lot of goodwill, The Butcher Block was rebuilt at its current home at 43-46 41st Street.
More than thirty years on, we are still doing what we started with: quality meats cut fresh daily, hearty prepared Irish meals, and shelves stocked with imported Irish groceries, from Barry’s Tea and Kerrygold to Tayto and Folláin jams. Today we ship Irish groceries nationwide and deliver fresh meats and prepared meals locally across Queens.
We are proud of the press coverage we have received over the years, linked below. We are prouder of the neighbours who have kept coming through the door since 1995.
