The Irish Breakfast Sandwich in Sunnyside, Queens: A Full Irish on a Roll

In Ireland it goes by the breakfast roll: the whole fry packed into bread and eaten on the way to work. At The Butcher Block on 41st Street in Sunnyside, Queens, our Irish breakfast sandwich puts Irish bacon rashers, our own BB Sausages, black pudding, white pudding and two fried eggs on a kaiser roll, and it is on every day from 8AM to 7PM.

Neha Talreja reviewed us for The Infatuation in January 2024, rated the shop 8.0 and named this sandwich the team’s “personal grand slam”. The review also sits in The Infatuation’s guide to NYC sandwich shops. Noel Gaynor, who opened The Butcher Block with Michael Roche in 1995, makes the sausages that go into every one by hand.

What goes in an Irish breakfast sandwich

Irish rashers are back bacon, cut from the loin, so every slice has a round of lean meat with a strip of fat along one edge. They stay flexible inside a roll, where the streaky bacon most diners serve would shatter.

BB Sausages are Noel’s own line, made in the shop from locally sourced meat. Irish sausages carry more rusk than an American breakfast link, which keeps them soft inside and gentle on spice. Robert Sietsema wrote about them for Eater in January 2020, and the full story is in our piece on Irish sausages in NYC.

Black pudding is made with pork, oatmeal and blood. White pudding uses the same base without the blood, so it comes out paler and more peppery, and our sandwich carries a slice of each. Our guide to black pudding and rashers in NYC covers the brands we stock and how to cook them.

Two fried eggs go on last, with ketchup, and the kaiser roll holds them without going soggy before you reach the train.

Irish breakfast roll or Irish breakfast sandwich?

They are the same order under two names. In Ireland the breakfast roll comes from the deli counter of almost every corner shop and petrol station, usually in a long crusty roll. New York delis build on a kaiser roll, so that is what we use. Ask for either at the counter.

Where to get an Irish breakfast sandwich in Queens

The Butcher Block is at 43-46 41st Street in Sunnyside, between Queens Boulevard and 43rd Avenue. The nearest subway is the 40 St Lowery St station on the 7 train, roughly two blocks away, with direct trains from Grand Central and Times Square. The shop is a short trip from Woodside, Long Island City, Astoria and Maspeth.

The deli counter is at the back of the shop, past the shelves of Tayto and Barry’s Tea. There is no seating inside, so most people take the sandwich home or eat it on the walk back to the train.

Can you get an Irish breakfast sandwich all day?

Yes. We are open every day from 8AM to 7PM, closed only on Christmas Day, and the Irish breakfast sandwich is available from opening to close. Plenty of people order it at lunchtime, next to our hot food specials and the fresh corned beef sandwiches that bring the Sunnyside lunch crowd in on weekdays.

For a group or office order, call ahead on 718 784 1078 and we will have it boxed at the counter.

Irish breakfast sandwich delivery from our Sunnyside deli

Our deli is on DoorDash for delivery around Sunnyside and the nearby neighbourhoods, with the DoorDash store taking orders from 9AM to 6:30PM. The sandwich travels well because the rashers and pudding hold their texture inside the roll.

Making a full Irish breakfast at home

Everything inside the sandwich is for sale in the shop, BB Sausages included. For the rest of the fry, our shelves carry O’Donnell’s potato bread, Pat the Baker buttermilk soda bread, McCambridge gluten free soda bread and Brennans batch bread, with Barry’s Tea for the pot.

If you live further away, our online shop ships across the US. Irish back bacon from Donnelly’s and Glen Ri and black and white pudding from the same two producers ship chilled overnight, Monday to Wednesday, so they travel cold. Pantry items go by UPS Ground, and the details are on our shipping and delivery page. If you are local, free same day pickup at the shop is an option at checkout.
