Where to Buy Brennan’s Bread in NYC (and Get It Shipped Anywhere in the US)
Joseph Brennan baked the first Brennans loaves himself in 1972, in a single room bakery on Fumbally Lane in Dublin. Today Brennans batch bread sits on our shelf at 43-46 41st Street in Sunnyside, Queens, at $6.99, and we send it from here to customers all over the country.
What Brennan’s batch bread is
A batch loaf is baked with the loaves packed tight together, so the sides pull apart soft and pale and only the top and bottom take a crust. Brennan’s Batch has a flour dusted top and a slightly chewy crust around a light crumb. It toasts evenly and cuts cleanly for sandwiches.
Brennans is still run by the family that started it, with the bakery now in Walkinstown in Dublin. Many people in Ireland know the name from the radio ads voiced by Old Mr Brennan himself and the line printed on every bag, “Today’s Bread Today”. Their white sliced loaf, the one Irish people call a sliced pan, is the Family Pan. The Batch is the taller loaf with the floury top, and it is the one we stock.
If you prefer brown bread, Brennan’s Wholemeal is on the same shelf at the same price.
Where to buy Brennan’s bread in NYC
You can buy Brennan’s at our shop in Sunnyside, Queens. Noel Gaynor and Michael Roche opened The Butcher Block on January 4, 1995, and Noel still works the deli counter regularly. We are open every day from 8AM to 7PM, and closed only on Christmas Day.
To collect, add the loaves to your basket on our website and choose free pickup at checkout. Your order is boxed and ready at the counter the same day, and you pay nothing extra for it. You can also walk in and take a loaf off the shelf. When The Infatuation reviewed us, they wrote that we “can fulfill all of your soda bread and Cadbury needs”, and our bread shelf is a big part of that.
Next to the Brennans loaves you will find O’Donnell’s Potato Bread, Pat the Baker Buttermilk Soda Bread, McCambridge gluten free soda bread and Pat the Baker white bread. For anyone in Queens looking for Irish bread close to home, this is the shelf. For everything else we stock as an Irish grocery store in NYC, from Barry’s Tea to Batchelor’s Beans, our guide to Irish food in Queens covers the whole shop.
How shipping Brennan’s bread works
Brennan’s Batch ships from our shop by UPS Ground to any address in the contiguous United States, usually within three to five business days. Bread travels as a pantry item, so it does not need the chilled overnight service our rashers and sausages use.
UPS works out the exact price from your ZIP code at checkout, so you see the full cost before you pay. A box with several loaves costs less per loaf to send than a box with one. A customer in Colorado recently ordered three at once. Brennan’s freezes well, and you can toast slices straight from the freezer, so extra loaves keep for weeks.
We ship within the lower 48 states only, and we cannot deliver to PO boxes. The full details are in our nationwide shipping policy, and the rest of what we send across the country, from tea to crisps, is in our guide to buying Irish food online in the USA.
Build your fry around it
A full Irish needs toast under it, and Brennan’s is the loaf for the job. Add Donnelly’s Back Bacon rashers at $7.99, Donnelly’s Breakfast Bangers at $8.99, and Donnelly’s black pudding and white pudding at $3.99 each, and the plate is done. A pot of Barry’s Tea finishes it.
For lunch, two slices of Brennan’s with butter and a bag of Tayto Cheese & Onion crushed in the middle make the crisp sandwich plenty of us grew up on.
If you collect from Sunnyside, the bread and the meats go home in the same bag. If you want the fry shipped, note that the bacon, bangers, black pudding and white pudding are chilled, so they travel overnight and only leave us Monday to Wednesday. We suggest placing the chilled items as a separate order from the bread. Our post on black pudding and rashers in NYC has more on the meats we carry.
Send a taste of home this Christmas
Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year. A couple of loaves of Brennan’s and a box of Barry’s Tea make a good parcel for anyone who grew up in Ireland and now lives a long way from a Dublin shop.
For bread and other pantry items shipped by UPS Ground, order by Wednesday, December 16. For chilled meats such as rashers and pudding, order by Thursday, December 17, so they ship on Monday, December 21. For free pickup in Sunnyside, order any day up to Thursday, December 24, during opening hours.
